Digital Watches Revolutionize Timekeeping

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Much to the consternation of traditionalists in the watch making world, the introduction of digital watches has literally changed the face of timekeeping. From the very beginning of mechanical timepiece design, clock and watch faces have featured analog movements with two hands, one showing the hour the other showing the minutes. Eventually a sweep hand was added to denote the seconds passing by.

This configuration remained as the standard for hundreds of years and is still the dominate feature of watches today. The electronics revolution the swept through the consumer products market in the nineteen sixties and nineteen seventies was not lost on how watches and other timepieces were designed. There were two innovations in particular that helped propel a new look and function into the watch market.

Having a lasting impact on watch design the first design innovation was the introduction of the electric watch powered by a battery. The principle advantage to the addition of a battery was eliminating the need to mechanically wind the mainspring of the watch.

One perceived disadvantage was that the watch was not made anymore accurate and whether the addition of a battery would have a positive impact on reliability was still somewhat an unknown. The battery as a power source paved the way for another important design innovation.

The second and probably most important design innovation was rooted in the growing use of light emitting diodes or LEDs which were originally developed for use in space craft. Power consumption and conservation are critical factors in the design of manned spacecraft and unmanned satellites and light emitting diodes brought a sea change in space exploration.

LEDs are a solid state device that was a complete departure from the age old technology of the incandescent light bulb. By design, LEDs consumed only a fraction of the power needed by incandescent or fluorescent lights.

It is thought by many that a Russian, Oleg Vladimirovich created the first light emitting diode in nineteen twenty six and that his early research was never taken seriously. The mid nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties saw a flurry of additional research on the phenomenon of electroluminescence found that the chemical reaction of charged gallium arsenide produced a bright, visible light. The reaction that took place was nearly identical to that which takes places in transistors.

So by the early nineteen seventies LEDs were being incorporated into a number of consumer products and it was not long before the humble wrist watch was changed forever. The first watch model to take advantage of the emerging LED technology was the Pulsar that was introduced in nineteen seventy two by the Hamilton Watch Company.

The first Pulsar was expensive but that fact alone did stop its successful market launch and the watch became popular with those buyers who were interested in sporting the latest technology. The unique nature of the Pulsar and its success drove efforts by competitors to reduce the price of this new look in order to increase demand among consumers.

It was not long before another emerging technology came along that improved on the original concept of a watch with a digital readout. Liquid crystal display technology appeared right the heels of the LED watch and the face of timekeeping was changed yet again.

Requiring far less power than the LED, the liquid crystal display resulted in longer life for watch batteries and the technology is still a dominate force in all manner of high tech products. LCD technology can be seen everywhere today, often in modern computer monitors, wide screen televisions and other electronic devices such as cell phones and MP3 players and automobile dashboard displays.

Watch Makers Discover Part Standardization

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Like countless other consumer products, the way in which modern wrist watches are manufactured has undergone incredible changes since the Industrial Revolution that broke during the turn of twentieth century. This important period in world history ushered in entirely new ways to mass produce products for a growing world population.

In every facet of manufacturing there were incredible technological advances that improved efficiencies and helped reduce production costs.

Most of us have heard about the way Henry Ford changed the way automobiles were built by developing the production line assembly method. Cars would constantly roll off the Ford assembly line as workers would fit various parts to the chassis in a precise order and within a predetermined time.

What few of us think about are the other changes that made this type manufacturing operation possible. Absolutely critical to the success of the mass production line was the development of standardized parts, components that are nearly identical to each other.

Prior to the development of mass production assembly lines, most mechanical assemblies, including watches were built from components that were made individually most often by different producers. This meant that very often, parts from one machine be it a car, locomotive or sewing machine, could be not be used on another machine.

A good example of the obvious draw backs to building machines individually can be seen in a tragic story from World War One. The French developed a machine gun, the Chauchat that was built one at a time by individual craftsmen. Though the plans for the gun called for the same dimensions, differing production methods and the whim of the builder resulted in each weapon literally being a one of a kind creation.

For the troops in the field, this nonstandard way of manufacturing had tragic sometimes fatal results. French Army and U.S. Army troops that had been issued the gun quickly discovered that the parts were not interchangeable, meaning that the parts from one gun could not used on another.

A second even more serious drawback was that the loading and firing mechanism in the guns would often jamb owing to the lack of integrated quality control methods. All in all, the Chauchat was a disaster for the troops that had rely in it during the brutality of trench warfare.

A far less daunting problem was faced by those in the watch making and watch repair business. Like the Chauchat, the parts from one brand or even model of watch could not used to repair the same make and model. A major change in how watch parts were designed and manufactured came from the Bulova Watch Company.

In the early nineteen twenties Bulova introduced the world’s first wrist watch designs that incorporated standardized parts manufactured to very close tolerances. The major benefit to this change in engineering and design strategy was that watch makers could use the parts from one Bulova watch to repair any other Bulova watch regardless of the model. Another additional benefit to watch repairers was the ability to keep spare parts on hand and as a result, the time needed to repair a Bulova watch was greatly reduced.

As other watch producers adopted the practice of parts standardization and integrated quality control, the reliability of wrist watches was greatly increased. The use of standardized components meant that those parts that subject to wear did so in more consistent and predictable way, requiring far less maintenance and repair than those timepieces assembled as one of kind items.

Sadly, as with most old line businesses that saw significant change and as watches became more trouble free, the once wide spread trade of watch repair has largely disappeared.

Sport Cars, Designer Suits, Expensive Cigars and Watches

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

For many owning a sports car, designer suits and expensive watches is a dream only possible in the movies. Even as children we are almost programmed to turn and look at the beautiful sleek sports car as it cruises through the town. Sports cars are the zenith of motoring and something which people dedicate their lives to. These are a symbol of success and money which attracts many women and make men jealous.

Everyone can name at least one sports car, Ferrari’s, Porsches, Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus and Lamborghini to name just a few. So what is the appeal of such unobtainable cars? Sports cars aren’t for convenience or practicalities; they are purely made to be beautiful and luxurious. Why is it that so many of our own screen hero’s don’t drive practical 4×4’s or be economically friendly and cycle? Can we really picture James Bond turning up to save the world in a 5 door hatchback? No. Sports cars do exactly what they say on the tin. They are fast; they only hold 2 people and don’t worry about space for things like groceries.

Sports cars were initially manufactured for the affluent classes as the “ordinary” cars of the day were dull and boring and practical. Sports cars provided the luxury of speed, safety and comfort. For those who buying a car is not a necessity but a pleasure, you can buy and sell sport and luxury cars by visiting Exotics-Auto.com which is a classified specialized in such cars. If you need more information about such automobiles or to have a picture for your desktop until you can buy a real one, visit TuneAuto.com. the automobile Portal and image gallery where you can find latest news and images for different cars. You can complete your man about town image by buying the latest fashion and accessories from Armani, Brioni (Suit maker for James Bond), BOSS, Kiton and Ralph Lauren or expensive cigars and watches like Cartier and Breitling from some of web sites that offer these products at more reasonable prices such as ChicDogs.com which is a Portal for luxury and designer products.

Here is your chance to live the life that seems only possible in the movies, what are you waiting for?

Learn About the Different Watch Models Citizen Offers

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

For well over the past eighty years Citizen has been producing high quality watches. Many of their watch models have introduced features that had never been used for watches previously. Citizen has changed our perception as to what watches are to be used for. Their voice recognized watches were the first of there kind for example. The revolutionary Lithium-Ion powered rechargeable battery stores energy to power the watch.

These Citizen models are under the Eco-Drive brand and are solar powered. With one charge of just a few hours, the watch can run for months without the need to be recharged again. Eco-Drive Aqualand diver’s chronograph was the first of its kind watch including light powered with an electronic depth sensor for scuba-diving. This particular model is water resistance up to 200 meters and a depth display up to 125 feet. Other features include lowest water temperature display, dive log memory up to twenty dives, current water temperature display and surface interval measurement. Once someone goes beneath four meters in the water, the watch will autonomously switch to dive mode.

Citizens Watches can range in price from the low one hundred dollar rage to a little over five hundred dollars. Of course those prices can vary per distributor, sales, discounts etc. However, that seems to be the average high and low prices for Citizen Watches. New Citizen Watches brought from a reputable dealer should include the manual, original Citizen box and a warranty from Citizen.

Even though Citizen Watches aren’t overly priced, there are inexpensive replica Citizen’s on the market. You may want to do a watch comparison between an authentic Citizen and a replica before you decide which one to buy. In many cases people just like the way a watch looks and if they can get a replica at a lower price they will. Usually there are differences though that may affect the overall quality of the watch in addition to the price.

Men’s and Women’s Citizens watch models:

Eco-Drive Solartek/ Skyhawk/ Bracelet/ Leather Strap/ Diver’s/ Titanium/ Chronograph/ Perpetual Calendar/ Digital, Analog/ All Men’s Watches/ Eco-Drive/ EcoDrive Diamond/ Ultra-thin eco-drive/ Swarovski Crystal/ Stiletto/ Bracelets

Citizen Watch movements may be based on quartz, chronograph or solar powers. If you have a Citizen Watch that requires batteries, you will be pleased to know that replacement batteries are very inexpensive and readily available. I was able to locate batteries for many Citizen brands for under ten dollars. Batteries can even be purchased based on the model you have so you don’t have to worry about a conflict in parts that could damage your watch. Since the majority of the newer Citizen brands are solar powered, this won’t even be an issue for most. Some common Citizen Watch features may include slide rules, alarms, water resistance, calendars and tachometers for most models.

As the owner of a Citizen Kinetic energy watch, I would personally recommend the Citizen brand. After over five years of having the watch it just keeps right on ticking with no need to ever change the battery! This is because kinetic energy uses your body motion to power the watch. The two tone gold and silver has yet to wear off or fade. Anytime I do wear the watch I always get compliments on it and people really think that I spent thousands of dollars on it when it really only cost a few hundred dollars.

Difference Between Analog and Digital Watches

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Watch is one of the most significant inventions for mankind. It is basically a timepiece that is made to be worn on a person. Everyone needs a watch as everyone wants to be punctual. Generally, people have a number of tasks to be taken care of. To make sure they complete their tasks on time, they need to keep track of time. Using a wristwatch is probably the best way to keep track of time.

Over the past few decades, watches have evolved significantly. The development in the technology has resulted in the development of different types of watches. Different people have different requirements and this is the reason why different people prefer different types of watches. Some people prefer watches with basic features whereas some people prefer watches with advanced features. Analog watches and digital watches are two different types of watches that are very popular among users. They use different technologies to display time.

Analog Watches

In analog watches, the display is not digital as a series of digits is not used to indicate the time. Instead of a series of digits to indicate the time, two or three rotating hands are used to indicate the time. Analog watch faces have Roman numerals, numbers or tick marks to indicate the intervals of time. The rotating hands point to numbers arrayed on the circular dial of the watch so as to indicate the time.

The rotating hands are of different lengths and they also rotate at different speeds. Each hand indicates a part of the actual time and so, the hands are used together to indicate the time. Design wise, analog watches are very simple. However, it’s also possible to design watches with complex designs for the dial and the hands. Analog watches are also easy to use and this is the reason why they are so popular among users. Some analog watches are cheap whereas as some are expensive. The cost of an analog watch depends on the finishing and the details of the parts that make up the watch.

Digital Watches

In digital watches, the display is digital as a series of digits is used to indicate the time. Unlike analog watches, the rotating hands are not used to indicate the time. The time is displayed as a number. For example, 5:30 AM is displayed on a digital watch to indicate the time whereas in an analog watch, the short hand pointing to five on the dial and the long hand pointing to six on the dial represents the 5:30 AM.

Along with information about hours and minutes, digital watches display information about number of seconds precisely. This is the reason why digital watches are widely used by people who need to know time very precisely. Over the past few decades, digital watch technology has improved significantly. A number of advanced features have been introduced. Digital watches with advanced features like calculator, thermometer and compass are now available. Some digital watches even have the built-in system to determine the location.

Also, some digital watches allow users to download and upload data from their computers to their watches. With the development in digital watch technology, the cost of digital watches has decreased significantly. The price of a digital watch depends on the features and the quality of the parts that make up the watch. Complex digital watches with a number of advanced features are usually more expensive than simple digital watches with basic features.

What Are Atomic Watches and How Do They Work?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

The idea of atomic watches sounds a little exciting, doesn’t it? Well, it may sound more exciting than it really is. The atomic watch will not blow up either. Actually, the atomic watch acts as both a radio wave receiver and a quartz watch. When the atomic watch cannot receive the time signal, it reverts to a quartz watch so that the wearer does not track of the correct time for long.

As a radio wave receiver, the wristwatch is able to keep the most accurate time according to the atomic clock of the country in which it is intended to be used. For instance, the American atomic watches will receive a low frequency radio signal from the U.S. atomic clock located in Colorado. European atomic watches will keep time according to the European country in which it was purchased. An American watch would not work in a European country because of the difference in transmitter frequency.

Within the watch case of an atomic watch, there is a small antenna. The small antenna receives the time broadcast from the atomic clock. In this way, the watch will provide the most accurate time because it will be in synch with the country’s atomic clock. The atomic clock is powered by a battery or solar energy. When the battery is changed, the watch will set itself when it begins to receive the signal again. There is no need to rewind the watch.

Atomic watches will be the most accurate watch in any country in which the watches are worn. When a wearer travels out of the country, the watch will no longer receive the radio signal. At this time, the watch will switch over to a regular quartz watch. When the traveler goes back to their home country and the watch receives the time signal again, the watch will display the time according to the atomic clock in their country. If the you travel through the different time zones of your home country, you will be able to manually adjust the time zone on the watch to coordinate with the time zone in which you are located.

Atomic watches are constantly searching for their frequency in order to stay accurate. Sometimes, interference from a strong electrical field or blockage from a large building may shield the watch so that it does not receive the radio signal. If this happens, the watch will continue running from its last positive signal so that the time will remain correct. This means that you will not lose your accurate time even if you have temporarily lost the radio time signal.

As a radio receiver, atomic watches provide great accuracy for time and even style. Atomic watches are available for men and women in a variety of colors and sizes. You can find atomic watches made of plastic, rubber, stainless steel and other metals that are suitable for any budget. The accurate time provided by atomic watches marks this watch as the right watch for any time.

You Can Now Take Pictures From Your Watch!

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Many people enjoy personalized objects and gifts including photo watches. Photo watches are considered novelty watches that are suitable for different occasions. Photo watches can be personalized with personal photos that are displayed on the watch face. Although the photo watch is considered novelty, it can be manufactured using fine materials and accurate watch movements.

Generally, the best photos for a photo watch are close ups of the subject. A close up photo should be used because the space on the watch face is small. If a person or pet’s picture is to be used, a photo which shows only the face and uppermost shoulders would be an appropriate choice. If a person’s face is small in the photo and the photo has to be enlarged to fit the watch face better, the picture may lose details or become blurry.

The appearance of the photo should have enough contrast so that any facial or other small features are not lost in the rest of the photo. When the photo is placed on the watch face, the hands and face numbers are placed over the picture. The placement of the hands and numbers should be considered so that a photo’s best features are not lost beneath these watch features. Up to two faces are best on a watch face photo since too many photos may not be recognizable after the hands and face numbers are placed on the watch face.

People will find that many photos are suitable for placement on a watch face. It can be hard to pick a favorite photo in some cases. Favorite subjects include family members, pets, special places, objects and people. Parents can buy a picture watch for their children, parents, friends or each other to commemorate a special relationship.

Pet owners, children included, will enjoy wearing a watch with their favorite pet’s face on it. Instead of a photo, the customizable picture watches can be made with a company logo on the watch face. This enables a company to give gifts that are branded with their logo. The photo or picture watch is versatile when it comes to adding a favorite picture or business logo.

There are many photo watches available that can suit any style or color desired. It is possible to find a quality photo watch to suit different budgets. Photo watches are created with different styles such as formal, casual, sporty and teen. Photo watches are available for men, women and children. Photo watches may be created with a metal or plastic casing and the ability to use different materials in their construction adds to their range in prices.

Photo watches make a great surprise gift for someone else or a buyer can buy the photo watch as a special keepsake gift for him or herself. The photo watch can make a touching gift for the recipient when the personal photo on the watch face is chosen for its meaning to the wearer. Photo watches have many fans because of their versatility as a jewelry item.

New Technology Lets You Watch TV From Your Watch

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

I guess it was only a matter of time before someone came up with a good watch that pays videos. We have been seeing them for years in cartoons and sci-fi movies but now they are here! With the huge success of Ipod’s and various other pda’s in recent years comes watches that allow users to store and watch videos. The MP3 and MP4 watches have been on store shelves for a few years now but their popularity isn’t very strong.

The video watches have the capability of playing MP3 AND MP4’s in addition to video formats. I think the video watches will be more popular than music watches ever were. They are already making a big impact on the Chinese market particularly amongst the youth. Just as with the case of camera phones, the Chinese are always the first to get new technologies. It’s only a mater of time before video watches spread to the rest of the world.

Video watches work the same way as other portable multimedia devices work. The watch is connected to your computer using a USB port contained on the watch and files are transferred onto it. In order for everything to work properly, you will need the watch itself, the accompanying software, and earphones. Models of video watches range from one gigabyte to eight gigabytes of memory depending on the brand.

Video formats also vary but the common formats should be supported in any case. Formats such as AVI, MP4, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, DAT, RM and MOV are widely utilized for multimedia. Optional features may include AM/FAM radio, voice recording, picture storage and display, Bluetooth headset and text functions. It may be redundant to mention but every model I have reviewed thus far of video watches are in color only.

Built in battery chargers, various operating system compliancy, hours of playback time, waterproof and similar features appear to be common for all video watch models. To my surprise video watches are very inexpensive. I was able to find several all priced for under one hundred dollars. This may be a good alternative to Apple’s I-Pod for the people who want to get a portable media device.

Watches that play video will display the video on the watches face itself. The audio is sent through to the connecting earphones so you can hear what is being played. Some models may include built in speakers that will allow you to hear without the earphones on. Since the video is watch size, you can expect screen display to be smaller than two inches. From what I’ve seen listed online, the average screen size is only 1.6 inches. Nevertheless, I’m sure someone sitting on a long plane trip won’t mind that. As long as the can watch something that will keep them busy and take their mind’s off of the flight. From my perspective a video watch is perfect for travel.

In conclusion, I don’t think everyone will run out and get a watch that plays video but I do think there is room for it on the market. As this technology begins to develop and spread, you will begin to see the screens become larger and new features added that go beyond both the watch and video realm. In the meantime video watches come fully equipped with everything you could ask for in a video player.
